If you come into contact with live stock for your employment or study, there may be a requirement for vaccination for Q Fever. We have GPs qualified to screen your immunity and provide the vaccine in required.

What is the process for Q Fever immunisation ?

You will need to schedule two doctors appointments, exactly 7 days apart.

At your first appointment you will complete forms for the doctor to assess your Q Fever requirement. You will then have a pathology test at Sullivan & Nicolaides next door to our practice. Finally, you will return to see our nurses and have a skin scratch test.

Importantly, your second appointment must take place 7 days later. The doctor will review your blood and skin test results. If a vaccination is required, this needs to be done at this time also.

NOTE: You must attend your follow up appointment 7 days after you skin scratch test. This test cannot be repeated.

What happens when I have an iron infusion?

An iron infusion is a medical treatment where iron is delivered directly into your bloodstream through a vein (intravenously, or IV). It's usually given when oral iron supplements haven’t worked, aren’t tolerated, or when iron levels need to be raised quickly.

Blood tests are usually done to confirm iron deficiency. If you doctor prescribes an iron infusion, you will purchase the prescription from your chemist. The dose will given in our treatment room under the supervision of a nurse and your doctor and takes about an hour.

An IV line will be placed in your arm and the dose will be infused slowly. You will need to stay for a short while after the infusion to ensure that there is no adverse reaction.

Skin cancer is a serious but preventable condition affecting many Australians – with sun protection and early detection, we can reduce the risks.

It is important to get a professional skin check by a GP or dermatologist if anything suspicious appears on your skin or if you are high risk. Talk to your doctor about if and how often you should be getting a regular professional skin check.

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma (BCC); squamous cell carcinoma (SCC); and melanoma.

BCC is the most common form of skin cancer. It rarely spreads to other parts of the body and typically develops on parts of the body that have been chronically exposed to the sun, such as the face.
SCC is the second most common form of skin cancer and is most frequently seen on sun-exposed areas, such as the head, neck and back of the hands, but it is possible to get it on any part of the body, including the inside of the mouth, lips and genitals.
Melanoma is rarer than BCC and SCC, but is more deadly. If not detected early, it can spread to other organs. Early diagnosis is associated with better outcomes.

How to prevent skin cancer

Overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) light causes 95% of melanomas. The Melanoma Institute of Australia advises that the best way to prevent melanoma is to protect your skin from the sun by following the 5 Sun Safe Rules:

Seek shade , especially in the hottest part of the day.

Wear sun-protective clothing that covers your back, shoulders, arms and legs.

Wear a broad-brimmed hat . A brim protects your ears and neck more than a cap.

Wear wrap-around sunglasses . Check the label to ensure they meet the Australian standard (Category 2, 3 or 4).

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50+ every 2 hours and after swimming or exercise.

Delivered in six coaching sessions, at a relaxed pace, the initiative is designed to help you discover ways of changing your day-to-day behaviour. You have the choice of groups or one-to-one coaching locally, at home or at work. Participation can be on the phone, online or in culturally adapted sessions.

Salisbury Medical Centre is open from 7.30am until 6pm from Monday to Friday and 8am to 12pm on a Saturday. We are closed on public holidays.

If you or your family need care and our medical centre is closed, alternative options are available:

Call 13SICK (that's 13 7425) and request a bulk billed, after-hours doctor home visit. The doctors are on the road from 6 pm weeknights, 12 noon Saturdays, all day Sundays and on public holidays.

Cervical Cancer Awareness Week - The Power of Choice

1. One (1) dose of the HPV vaccine is free for young people from 12 to 25 years, male and female if you missed your chance at school age.

2. Cervical screening tests every five (5) years for women and those with a cervix from age 25–74 years.

Are you due for a whooping cough vaccine?

Whooping cough cases are surging in Queensland.

From 1 January to 11 August 2024, there were 7,010 cases of whooping cough reported, compared to just 104 cases in the same period last year. In babies and infants this highly contagious respiratory infection, also known as pertussis, can lead to severe complications, including hospitalisation and even death. Whooping cough can be prevented by vaccination. The the vaccine is recommended for people in contact with babies, and for those who are pregnant. Having a vaccine while pregnant is the best way to protect your baby.

The whooping cough vaccine is available for free under the National Immunisation Program during pregnancy, for children aged 2, 4, 6, and 18 months, and 4 years old, and for adolescents aged 11-13 years.

Anyone under 20 who missed a childhood whooping cough vaccine can also access one for free.

Please speak to your GP about vaccination.

Who can donate?
Everyone over the age of 16 can register to donate their organs and tissues on the Australian Organ Donor Register (AODR).

It doesn’t matter how old you are, or even if you think you’re not healthy enough – you can still register. A specialist donation team will make an assessment on a case by case basis, and there is every chance that some of your organs and tissues may be suitable for donation.

Protect your teen from serious disease

School aged kids get free vaccinations to protect them from diseases.

Queensland schools have a vaccination program for students in years 7 & 10. For more information please see the vaccination schedule provided by Queensland Health.

If your teen is not vaccinated at school, catch ups are available and your GP can help with this. Adolescents should get any missed routine childhood vaccinations. They can still get them free under the National Immunisation Program up until they turn 20 years.

Children and adolescents can also get the following free vaccinations if they missed one.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) up to and including 25 years
dTpa, meningococcal ACWY and meningococcal B up to and including 19 years

Influenza vaccinations are currently free and recommended for all Queenslanders over 6 months old.

RSV immunisations are available

RSV vaccines for the very young and the elderly

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common cause of respiratory illness. Very young children and elderly people have an increased risk of severe disease and hospitalisation due to RSV.

A single dose vaccine is recommended by ATAGI for all adults over 75 years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples aged over 60 years and any adults over 60 years with medical conditions that increase the risk of severe disease due to RSV. Medical conditions associated with increased risk include cardiac disease, chronic respiratory conditions, immunocompromising conditions, chronic metabolic disorder eg diabetes, chronic kidney disease and chronic neurological conditions.

At this time, the adult vaccine is only available by private prescription, at a cost of $350. Our GPs are able to provide a prescription for collection from a pharmacy and our nurses will administer for you.

All Queensland infants, born from 1 February 2024, are eligible for a free RSV immunisation. The vaccine will be offered at the time of birth or prior to discharge from hospital.

Eligible infants that were not immunised in hospital at the time of birth are able to present to Queensland Children's Hospital - Level 2 (next to Pharmacy). It is a drop in clinic open Monday to Friday 8am-4pm. Once an infant reaches 8 months of age, they will no longer be eligible for this dose. Please note that Salisbury Medical Centre is not able to provide this immunisation.

What is a heart Health Check?

Do you know what your risk of having a heart attack or stroke is?

Having a regular Heart Health Check with your GP will help you better understand your risk of a heart attack or stroke.
Most importantly, your GP and nurse can support you to lower this risk. A Heart Health Check is a 20-minute check-up with your GP to assess your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Heart health checks are covered by Medicare and will be bulk billed at Salisbury Medical Centre.

People with diabetes from 35 years
First Nations people from 30 years

What should you expect at your hearth health check?

There are many different factors that can all play a part in your risk of developing heart disease. Your GP or nurse may ask about:

Assess

Closing the Gap Health Campaign

The Close the Gap Campaign aims to close the health and life expectancy gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians within a generation.

If you identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Australian, you need to register with Medicare. Eligible patients can get their medicine at the concession price. Or, if they have a concession or health care card, their medicine will be free. Your health team at Salisbury Medical Centre can help you do this.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are under-identified in many health-related data collections. Our practice endeavours to identify the Indigenous status of our patients. Please check with our reception team that your Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status has been added.

All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can get a free health check at Salisbury Medical Centre.

What happens at a health check?

Health checks will vary depending on your age. It should take 40-60 minutes. Your health practitioner will check your blood pressure, blood sugar levels, height and weight. You might also have a blood and urine test. You can speak to them about your family history and any health worries that you have.

What are the benefits of having a health check?

Having a regular health check can keep your health heading in the right direction. It can prevent small health problems becoming big ones. The information provided is confidential which means they need to have your permission to share the information.

How much does it cost?

The health check is free and you will be bulk billed at our practice.

Check if your child is eligible for free Meningococcal vaccination

The Queensland MenB Vaccination Program now provides free meningococcal B vaccines to eligible Queensland infants, children and adolescents.

What is Meningococcal disease?

Meningococcal disease is a rare but severe infection that occurs when meningococcal bacteria invade the body from the nose or throat.

Meningococcal bacteria are carried in the nose and throat of a small proportion of healthy people (about 10%) and are spread through close prolonged contact. The bacteria are more commonly found in teenagers and young adults. There are a number of different strains of meningococcal bacteria. Worldwide, the main strains that cause meningococcal disease are A, B, C, W and Y.

Most people with meningococcal infection fully recover, but some people can develop long-term health complications including limb deformity, skin scarring, deafness and possible loss of brain function.

Who is eligible for a free MenB vaccination?

The following Queenslanders who have not yet started or completed an age-appropriate course of menB vaccination will be eligible for the Queensland MenB Vaccination Program:

Infants, 6 weeks to 12 months of age.
Catch up vaccination will be offered for children aged over 12 months to less than 2 years.
Adolescents aged 15 to 19 years (inclusive).

Once vaccination is commenced during the eligibility period, a person remains eligible for their second dose, regardless of age.

More medicines now available for 60 day prescriptions

60 day prescriptions are now available for more medicines

From 1 March 2024, more common medicines listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) will have the option of a 60-day prescription. This means many patients can now receive twice the medication for the cost of a single prescription.

The second stage of medicines available for 60-day prescriptions will support patients who live with a stable ongoing health condition such as:

androgen deficiency
arthritis
breast cancer
bipolar disorder
diabetes
epilepsy
hypothyroidism
incontinence
menopause
migraine
prostate cancer
prostate enlargement

The first stage of medicines available made available in September 2023 for 60-day prescriptions:

cardiovascular disease
Crohn’s disease
gout
heart failure
high cholesterol
hypertension
osteoporosis
ulcerative colitis.

More medicines will be added at the final stage in September 2024.

Please speak to your GP about whether you are eligible to get a 60-day prescription.

Principal Psychologist

Chris is here to help. A psychologist who is currently completing further training in the Master of Clinical Psychology (Advanced Entry) program through the University of Southern Queensland. In clinical practice, Chris believes the key to effective therapy is to balance validation with behaviour change to support client centred goals. This is guided by an individualised, flexible, and affirming approach to be useful to you.

Chris is formally trained in a range of therapeutic techniques including:

- Dialectical Behavioural Therapy

- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

- Interpersonal Psychotherapy

- Family Therapy

- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

- Mentalization-Based Treatment

He is also a Supervisor Training & Assessment Program (STAP)-endorsed supervisor. Chris has over eight years of experience working in mental health services across a diverse caseload including complex and severe child and youth presentations. These include supporting clients in headspace, as a senior Psychologist with Queensland Health’s Child and Youth Mental Health Services and, most recently, private practice working with adults and adolescents.

In his spare time, Chris is a soccer fan, coffee lover and devoted dog dad to Lucky the beagle.

What to expect at a pre-employment medical

The doctors and nurses at Salisbury Medical Centre have years of experience at providing pre-employment health checks. Many companies require a medical as part of the onboarding process. If you haven't had a medical before, this is a guide on what you can expect.

Depending on your line of work, there will be different requirements to being "work place fit". You can anticipate the doctor checking:

Your height, weight, temperature and blood pressure
Questions will be general and lifestyle related
Your hearing & vision will be tested
ECG to check heart function
Lung Function test (spirometry)
A physical examination will be undertaken
You may be required to take an instant drug and alcohol test, particularly if you operate machinery. Positive results will be reviewed by a laboratory

From 1 November you can get free Shingles vaccination if you are over 65 or over 50 and Aboriginal or Torres Straight Islander

What is Shingles?

Shingles is a reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in a person who has previously had varicella (chickenpox). Shingles presents as a painful blistering rash on one side of the face or body that lasts 10-15 days. The risk of getting shingles increases with age and is higher in people who are immunocompromised. Older people (particularly those aged over 65 years) are also more likely to experience complications. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 and older are more likely to experience complications and higher rates of hospitalisations from shingles.

From 1 November 2023 free vaccination will be available to:

Adults aged 65 years and over (non Indigenous)
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults aged 50 years and over
Immunocompromised ad ults aged 18 years and over with the following medical conditions:

• haem o poietic stem cell transplant

• solid organ transplant

• haematological malignancy

• advanced or untreated HIV

Early detection of breast cancer gives the best chance of survival. It is important to keep a look out for any changes to your breast.

Breast Awareness

Be familiar with your breasts so that you’re alert of any changes that might occur. If you experience any symptoms such as lumps, dimples, discharge or discolouration, head to your doctor for further examination. It’s also important to remember that finding a lump doesn’t mean that you have cancer; most lumps are benign (not cancer). So, don’t panic if you do find a change, make an appointment with your doctor for further evaluation.

Mammograms

Mammograms are an x-ray picture of your breasts. They are checked by a radiographer for any abnormalities. Free mammograms are available for all women over 40, every 2 years. Let breast cancer awareness month be your reminder to book a mammogram. Speak to your doctor about breast screening. Many patients can now receive twice the medication for the cost of a single prescription

From 1 September 2023, nearly 100 common medicines listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) will have the option of a 60-day prescription. This means many patients can now receive twice the medication for the cost of a single prescription.

The first stage of medicines available for 60-day prescriptions will support patients stable on their current treatment and living with ongoing health conditions including:

cardiovascular disease
Crohn’s disease
gout
heart failure
high cholesterol
hypertension
osteoporosis
ulcerative colitis.

Please speak to your GP about whether you are eligible to get a 60-day prescription.

Women's Health week - are your checks up to date?

This week is dedicated to prioritising physical and mental health for all women and girls across Australia. Your GP can advise you about your personal needs. Here is a guide to the health checks for women:

Cervical Screening

Every five years from age 25 to 70-74 . If you started having sex after age 25, screening starts two years after you were first sexually active

Breast Screening

Every two years from age 50-74 . Women w i th higher risk or family history of breast cancer may need to screen earlier/more often – speak to your GP.

Self check should be done o nce a month for women of all ages. Get to know the normal look and feel of your breasts. Speak to your GP if you notice any unusual changes.

Bowel Screening

Every two years for age 50+ for the general population. Women at higher risk may need to screen more often and with other tests.

Blood Pressure Check

Every two years for age 18+ or more often if at increased risk

Heart Health Check

At least every two years for age 45+ (age 35+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women).

Cholesterol Check

Every five years from age 45+ (age 35+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women). May be earlier/more frequent depending on family history and personal risk factors .

Bone health (fracture risk) review

Once a year for age 45+ or post-menopause. Depending on bone health and risk of fracture/osteoporosis, your GP may suggest a bone density scan (DXA) every two years.

Diabetes screening

At least every three years for age 40+ . May be earlier/more often for women at higher risk and those who are pregnant

STI screening

For sexually active women of all ages, speak to your GP about how often to screen for sexually transmissible infections (STIs). Women under 30 may need screening at least once a year

Pre-pregnancy care

As needed, when women are of childbearing age.

Skin check

Perform regular self-checks, looking for new/changed spots. Speak to your GP if you notice anything suspicious.

Mental health check

If you are experiencing symptoms such as sadness, irritability, fatigue or anxiety; have had changes to your eating or sleeping habits; or have any other mental health concer n s, speak to your GP.

Eye Test

From age 65 i f you notice vision problems. Speak to your GP if you have a family history of glaucoma.

Vaccination review

At least once a year for women of all ages.

Free flu vaccinations 2023

From 22 July to 31 August 2023, the Queensland Government is offering free flu vaccinations to all Queenslanders over 6 months of age. They are encouraging everyone to get vaccinated. It is particularly important for children, those over 65 years, vulnerable Queenslanders and pregnant women to be vaccinated.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition where there is too much glucose in the blood. The body can’t make insulin, enough insulin or is not effectively using the insulin it does make.

What are the symptoms of Diabetes

In type 1 diabetes, symptoms are often sudden and can be life-threatening so it is usually diagnosed within hours or days.

Common symptoms include:

Being more thirsty than usual
Passing more urine

National Blood Donor Week is a chance to say thank you and consider donation

Who needs donor blood?

About 1.5 million donations are made each year. Most of the blood is needed to help people with medical conditions, that require blood products regularly. These include cancer and blood diseases.

Who can donate blood?

Healthy adults between 18 to 75 years of age can donate every 12 weeks, subject to meeting the eligibility criteria. Check your eligibility with Australian Red Cross Lifeblood.

Donating is rewarding

When you donate blood, you will give approximately 470ml of blood. The process takes about 10 minutes and you need to allow an hour from start to finish. You will be given a snack and drink afterwards. I personally feel rewarded once I receive a text from Lifeblood to let me know where my blood is headed to be used for patients.

What do you need to know about changes to PBS prescriptions

Many patients living with a chronic condition will be able to buy 2 months’ worth (60-days’) of common PBS-listed medicines for the price of a single prescription, rather than the current 1 month’s supply. The change also means that patients will need fewer appointments with their GP for a repeat prescription.

When will the changes be made?

Implementation will be between 1 September 2023 through until 1 September 2024.

Which medications will be included?

The list of PBS medicines recommended by the independent Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) as suitable includes some medicines for chronic conditions such as for:

Asthma
breast cancer
cardiovascular disease
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
constipation
chronic renal failure
Crohn’s disease
depression
diabetes
endometriosis

Most medicines can be prescribed using an electronic prescription. During your consultation with your doctor, you can choose to get your prescription via SMS or email. You will receive a message with a link to your electronic prescription. Your script is stored on your digital device, so you can access it whenever you’re ready. You won't need to worry about carrying paper or losing your scripts

Closing the Gap Health Campaign

The Close the Gap Campaign aims to close the health and life expectancy gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians within a generation.

If you identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Australian, we can help you register with Medicare for Closing the Gap benefits. Eligible patients can get their medicine at the concession price. Or, if they have a concession or health care card, their medicine will be free. ATSI Health Check

This assessment is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders of all ages. It aims to make sure that all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders receive healthcare that meets their needs. What is a stroke?

A stroke happens when blood cannot get to the brain. It can be caused by a blocked or burst artery. Recognising signs of a stroke early can save someone's life. The Stroke Foundation has a guide to identifying stroke symptoms and acting quickly to help the patient.

Think… F.A.S.T.

The Stroke Foundation recommends the F.A.S.T. test as an easy way to remember the most common signs of stroke. Using the F.A.S.T. test involves asking these simple questions:

Face Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
Arms Can they lift both arms?
Speech Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?
Time Is critical. If you see any of these signs call 000 straight away.

Flu season is here

Who is eligible for a free flu shot?

People aged 65 years or over. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over. Pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy. People aged 6 months or over who have a medical condition that is associated with an increased risk of influenza disease complication. To be eligible you must a have a valid Medicare card.

Flu vaccines are recommended for everyone 6 months and older.

How do I arrange my flu shot?

We are running flu clinics for patients who only need to get their vaccination. If you need to see your GP for medical care, you can also get your flu needle. Please call 32771621 and we can make a suitable booking for you.

Can I get my employees vaccinated?

If you want to offer flu vaccinations to your employees we are able to visit you onsite. Our immunisation nurse, Min can arrange to come to you. Speak to our reception team for help to arrange this.

If you want to stop smoking, your GP is here to support you

With the assistance of counselling, support and medications you can successfully quit smoking. Making an appointment with your GP is the first step. They will talk to you about options available to you and help you make a quitting plan.

Think about the benefits

The Lung Foundation of Australia says "The effects of quitting are immediate

After 12 hours, almost all nicotine will be out of your system.
After 24 hours, the level of carbon monoxide in your blood will drop dramatically and you will have more oxygen in your bloodstream.
Within 1 month, your blood pressure returns to its normal level and your immune system begins to show signs of recovery.
After 2 months, your lungs will no longer be producing extra phlegm caused by smoking.
After 1 year, your risk of dying of heart diseases is half of what it would have been if you kept smoking."

Your GP will help you make a plan to quit. You can also make a plan using Quitcoach . This is a free service that will help you through the process and provide information on what to expect, strategies to cope and setting a timeline.

World Immunisation Week, 24-30 April, is a reminder to be protected from vaccine-preventable diseases.

Influenza vaccines now available

We are currently running Flu Clinics to immunise our patients against influenza.

The influenza vaccine is free under the National Immunisation Program for:

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over
Children aged 6 months to under 5 years
Pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy
People aged 65 years or over.
People aged 6 months or over who have medical conditions that mean they have a higher risk.

We also offer worksite vaccinations, where we come to the work site and provide immunisation for staff members for a fee.

Shingles vaccination now available

A free shingles vaccination is available to all people aged 70 years old, with a five-year catch up program for people aged 71 to 79 years old until 31 October 2023. This vaccine helps prevent Shingles & protects against painful complications of the disease.

Our GPs can help with a range of mental health support services

If you are experiencing feelings of sadness, lack of motivation, hopelessness or anxiety, speak to one of our GPs for advice. It is best to book a long appointment to talk through your mental health concerns with your GP. This will enable your doctor to assess your needs and provide advice. The GP may want to set up a mental health care plan. This involves an assessment of your mental health issues which also entitles you to Medicare subsidised rebate to be referred to a psychologist.

To assists those patients who suffer from a long-term medical condition, we have a support team of health care professionals.

How can we help?

If you have a chronic condition, we’ll create a personalised GP management plan to address your individual needs. To do this, you’ll first visit one of our chronic disease nurses, who will draw up a provisional plan. You’ll then visit the doctor, who will decide on the final plan and discuss this with you.

We also assist patients in accessing free services to help manage their chronic diseases. This includes GP Management Plans, Team Care Arrangements, medication reviews and regular reviews to ensure our patients are in good health. Our CDM clinic nurses are part of your healthcare team and will refer you to your required Allied Health provider(s).

Electronic Prescriptions can be provided by SMS or email

Electronic prescriptions are available for our patients

An electronic prescription or E-script is a digital version of a paper prescription.

How do e-scripts work?

If you choose to receive an electronic prescription, your doctor will send a SMS or email to your mobile phone. It will contain a link to a ‘token’ which contains your prescription information.

Visit the pharmacy of your choice and present your token. They will scan the token and provide you with the prescribed medication.

Can I still get a paper prescription?

If you are happy with a paper prescription you can continue to get you medication as usual.

Getting a Cervical Screening Test is easy

You now have options for your cervical screening test

Who should have a Cervical Screen Test?

You are eligible for cervical screening if you are 25 to 74 years old, have a cervix and have ever been sexually active. The Cervical Screening Test is a simple process to look for signs of the human papillomavirus (HPV) – a common infection that causes most cervical cancers.

Most cases of HPV clear up on their own, however, sometimes it can develop into cancer.

Doing the Cervical Screening Test every 5 years means your healthcare provider can monitor or investigate HPV further if needed.

How do I arrange a Cervical Screening Test?

When you are due for your screening please contact our medical centre. You will need to see your GP prior to screening but have the option of seeing our practice nurse, Min. She can provide this care to you, as an alternative to your regular doctor. You can also choose to self collect. This means that you collect the sample yourself. You will be given instruction and privacy to do this.

Have you completed your bowel cancer screening?

Eligible Australians aged 50 to 74 are mailed a free test done at home every 2 years

A simple at home test

This test is used to screen for Bowel Cancer. Screening can save lives by detecting the early signs of Bowel Cancer.

According to a 2017 study by Cancer Council Australia, screening for bowel cancer can reduce deaths from the disease by between 15% and 25%. The program is for people aged 50 to 74 years because this group of the Australian population is at highest risk of bowel cancer. Age is the biggest risk factor for bowel cancer, so even healthy people should do the test.

The program is for both men and women who have no symptoms.

Seek shade , especially in the hottest part of the day.

Wear sun-protective clothing that covers your back, shoulders, arms and legs.

Wear wrap-around sunglasses . Check the label to ensure they meet the Australian standard (Category 2, 3 or 4).

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50+ every 2 hours and after swimming or exercise.

Having a 20-minute Heart Health Check with your GP will help you better understand your risk. Most importantly, they can support you to lower this risk.

Who should have Heart Health Check?

Anyone 45 years and over or 30 years and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples should have a regular Heart Health Check with their doctor.

How much does a Heart Health Check cost?

Since April 2019, Heart Health Checks have been covered by Medicare and are free at practices that bulk bill this service.

Our GPs are qualified to assist with your travel health requirements. When you speak to one of our doctors, they can advise what vaccinations and preventative health measures you should take.

Are you planning an overseas trip?

Before travelling overseas, it’s important to check as soon as possible if you need a travel vaccination. Our doctors are able to advise you on what you need and the vaccinations can be done here in our clinic.

Is there a charge for Travel Vaccinations?
Your travel vaccinations and consultation are not covered by Medicare so these will be out of pocket expenses for you. Our consultation charge is $75 for appointments Monday to Friday.
